Top Five Reasons Why Mentorship Matters

It’s said, “People won’t do what you want them to do. They won’t do what you tell them to do. But they will do what you do.” Mentorship programs are used to give people positive examples to spend time with and learn from. Here are five reasons why those roles are so important!

1. Mentors fill in the gaps!

Students have gaps in their life just by circumstance. At times, there’s a need for an older sibling figure, someone who’s interested in the same topics as them, or someone who can teach them more about a new interest. Mentors can fill those gaps and provide information that can change students’ lives.

2. Mentors improve social skills!

Outside of the sphere of school life, students will have to interact with people from entirely different backgrounds. Mentors give them an in-between step to help them to develop confidence and healthy social instincts. (Something we can all use after such an unexpected year.)

3. Mentors improve grades!

Mentors not only encourage girls to get good grades, but they also show their mentees the real-life results of achieving those grades. The better grades you get, the more doors open for you and mentors are real-life examples of that.

4. Mentors build community!

Mentorship doesn’t have to end after the mentor-mentee period. Many mentors go on to be a part of the student’s life. Sometimes that means that they’re someone to text when school gets hard. Sometimes they provide helpful tips and opportunities in the future. Mentors can easily become part of the community of people pushing for you to succeed!

5. Mentors make space!

Need to ask a question that’s not related to school? Need to discuss how you’re feeling or why you got that B? That’s what a mentor is for. Everything you talk about isn’t decided for you. Mentorship creates a space for you to bring up your own topics and needs too.

IGA has three mentoring sessions that are spread throughout the year. Check out the Level Her Up Mentoring Program to learn more.
