Tackling Gender Inequality in Sports

Did you know from youth sports teams to professional athletes to the back-end business in sports, girls and women face discrimination, a lack of access, and limited opportunities?

The talk about the #WNBADraft contracts are making rounds, on social media, and it is bringing massive attention to the pay disparity between WNBA players vs. NBA Players. According to 2022 data from Basketball Reference, the average NBA player is making about $5.3 million. That is, a whopping, 41 times higher than the average WNBA player, who averages about $130,000 a year. Gender inequities are everywhere in women’s sports. They face limited funding, lack of media coverage, and pervasive body shaming, to name just a few.

There has been much progress over the last 50 years, but we cannot stop there. It is reported that by age 14, girls are dropping out of sports at twice the rate of boys. Social stigma and unrealistic body standards play a major role in these findings. Until we break these harmful stereotypes, women will continue to face inequality, in sports.

With their still being a significant difference in the media coverage, pay, and respect of women’s sports it is The International Girls Academy’s mission to make sure that we give our girls a platform to make social changes and bridge the gap between Men's and Women's sports.
