How We Embrace Kwanzaa’s Nguzo Saba Seven Principles at IGA

Written by: Sherle Thomas- IGA Student Freshman

Many people who check our website have several questions about why the founder selected Nguzo Saba’s seven principles. To provide a brief history, Makeba, our founder, decided to use these principles because she wanted something that would encompass the community while providing educational value. People have a misconception that these principles are just for people who celebrate Kwanzaa or people who identify with a specific group. In reality, these principles were designed for everyone to follow and help embark on change for the next generation of leaders.

The International Girls Academy implements these principles through the various programs offered for our students ranging from our Ujamaa Workforce Development Business Program to Nia Media Program; here we are just naming a few.

We believe it’s more than just writing our mission statement but doing the real work to ensure our words align with our actions. As a small but mighty nonprofit, we are going through growing pains like many other organizations. Despite these challenges, we are pushing ahead to provide impact and support where we’re needed. We encourage all of our followers, supporters, and fellow community leaders to participate in our efforts by applying one or more of these principles to their everyday lives.
